Meeting-talk with Romanian curator Maria Rus Boyan about strategies for presenting contemporary Romanian art around the world.

The meeting is part of the lecture program of the exhibition "Several Ways to Win the World", with curators: Desislava Dimova and Vera Mlechevska at the Doza Gallery from March 22-April 13, 2023.


Maria Rus Boyan is a Romanian critic and independent curator, living and working in Amsterdam. During her 30-year career, Maria Rus Boyan has organized international projects involving founding figures of the Romanian art scene such as Ana Lupas, Cornel Brudascu, Ion Grigorescu, Paul Neagu, and contributed to the debut of the most successful contemporary artists of the new generation, including Victor Mann, Adrian Gini, Cipriani Muresan and Alin Bozbiciu. Her long-standing collaboration with the German artist Ulay (1943-2020) led to the publication of the authoritative monograph “Whisper”, which in 2015 was awarded the AICA Prize for the Netherlands. She curated Ulay’s first international retrospective at Centro Parraga Murcia, 2005, and contributed as an expert to his recent retrospectives at Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, 2016, and Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, 2020. Maria Rusz Bojan is co-curator of “Performing History”, the Romanian pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2011. In the period 2017-2020, she curated three retrospective exhibitions and edited several publications dedicated to the renowned Polish artist Magdalena Abakanowicz. Maria Rusz Bojan is the Chair of the European Foundation ArtEast, and since 2008 she has been the director of MB Art Agency – a platform for curatorial projects and artistic consultations dedicated to Eastern European art.
